Frequently Asked Questions: Mermaid Bar & Distillery

Frequently Asked Questions: Mermaid Bar & Distillery

Where is the Isle of Wight Distillery?

On the Isle of Wight, just outside Ryde towards Seaview on Pondwell Hill. We’ve been producing spirits here since late 2017, after moving from our first home at Rosemary Vinyard.

Who owns the Isle of Wight Distillery?

Founded by Xavier Baker & Conrad Gauntlett in 2014, the Isle of Wight Distillery is the island’s first and only distillery. With a wealth of knowledge in brewing and winemaking, Xavier and Conrad set about combining their experience to embark on a passion project: hand-crafted spirits, made on the island.

Can I visit the distillery?

Yes, we are open as a bar called The Mermaid Bar 7 days a week. Towards the rear of the venue is a shop if you wish to purchase any of our spirits, tasting boards or gifts. Please ask the bar staff for assistance if the shop is unmanned.

Can I have a tour of the distillery?

Unfortunately, due to the small size of our facility, we are unable to conduct tours. However, we do offer an impressive view into the working distillery, through a glass wall situated towards the rear of the Mermaid Bar. Our bar staff are also very knowledgeable and will be able to answer any questions you may have, as well as show you our short film about the Mermaid brand and the distillation process.

Do you serve food? Can I view the food and drink menus before I visit?

Yes, our food and drink menus can be found on our Mermaid Bar page.

What are the distillery's opening hours?

To check the most up-to-date hours, please visit the Mermaid Bar page.

Can I sample the spirits made at the distillery?

Tasting boards are available to purchase from the Mermaid Bar shop and include samples of both our Mermaid and HMS Victory ranges.

Do I need to book a table at The Mermaid Bar?

Reserving a table is recommended at peak times, such as Friday and Saturday evenings, Sunday afternoons and during school holidays. You can do so by calling us on 01983 613653 (option 2) or emailing mermaidbar@isleofwightdistillery.com.

Are dogs welcome at the distillery?

The Mermaid Bar is dog friendly so all well-behaved dogs are welcome on leads and water bowls are provided. However, we do ask that all four paws stay on the floor.

Do you accept American Express at The Mermaid Bar?

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept American Express at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
